The Goo Goo Dolls

The Goo Goo Dolls Band was started in 1986 in Buffalo, New York by Johnny Rzeznick, (vocalist/guitarist) and Robby Tacac (vocalist/bassist). George Tutuska, the third member, played drums and percussion. That same year, they released their first album and after a Los Angeles performance were signed up by Metal Blade Records. The band was originally dismissed by critics but they were picked up by college radio and the local punk scene until the release of their third album Hold Me Up in 1990. By this time, they had developed their own style, a mixture of heavy metal, punk and pop rock. The group’s next album, “Superstar Car Wash”, was released to great critical acclaim in 1991.

Following the release of “A Boy named Goo”, George Tutuska left the band and was replaced by Mike Malinin. The Goo Goo Dolls went on tour for several months and after the release of their single “Name” from the album by the same name, they began to achieve commercial success. Following a feud with Metal Blade, they switched to Warner Brothers Records and their sound moved towards a more commercial direction. They reached stardom in 1998 when their single “Iris”, topped the billboard charts for several weeks and was nominated for six Grammy Awards. “Iris” was one of the many songs included in the album, “Dizzy Up the Girl”, that were released as singles. Due to their now more commercial sound, many of their long time fans were replaced by new fans. As a result, their concert sets include very few songs from their pre-1995 albums.

The group celebrated their 20th anniversary by releasing a new album, “Let Love In”. Several of the songs from this album, including “Let love In”, emerged as top 10 radio singles. The Goo Goo Dolls is releasing another song “Before It’s Too Late”, from the movie “Transformer” scheduled to open on July 4th of this year. Their summer tour will take them to many cities across the United Stated and the United Kingdom.
